  she really believes in some of the things she said, others things she is speculating on she admitted.... i admired her open mind to not thinkng she has all the answers.

  she is not a christain she said.

  my son and husband sat up for along time, comparing notes , debating on comparing what the bible says, what scientific evidence, historical evidence says, regarding jesus.

  Almost everything you said makes perfect sense, at least to me. I share your opinions on the bible - that it was simply a book written by men. Also about Jesus, that he was man, the rest about him we may never know. Is there a god or gods? Who knows. Growing up a witness myself, I have always wanted to cling to a belief system because I had always had one before. Then I realized that it is perfectely fine to admit that some questions don't have answers and might never . I would rather simply say 'I don't know what happens after death' rather than choose to believe some story a nomad made up about it a few thousand years ago. I mean if I wanted to believe in some made up story, I would believe in a much better story myself.

  Anyway, I wanted to say I like your attitude when you wrote :

  I have a feeling I may be this way for the rest of my life.........not having one belief one way or the other.

  I think that is courageous, not many people have the spiritual fortitude to take this less traveled road.

  I remember the first time I heard the grateful dead. My mother owned a few record albums - CCR, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Simon and Garfunkel, Moody Blues, and one album by the Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead. She would play these album over and over again. For the most part I hated all of it. I was only 5 or 6 and I really started to like 1 song she played. 'Uncle John's Band' was the song and I would dance all over the living room and spin in circles singing until I fell over. It was so happy, so free, so singable. As I got older I actually would listen to this on my own instead of only when she played it. Then some witnesses or someone told her the grateful dead was bad and she threw the album out before I was out of elementary school.

  I had some friends who were deadheads and wanted to take me to a concert, I told them I never had heard any of there music, not realizing that I had. So I went to a concert in 92, I was 18 and I was hooked. I had only been out of the witnesses a year and I saw things at the concert I never had seen before and most were not due to the acid. I saw people being free and non-judgemental and just themselves. I saw people out of their minds and out of their bodies and I swear I even saw people having sex. I danced and danced like I have never danced before or since.

  After the concert I become a total deadhead, listening to everything I could find and over the years going to concerts whenever possible. Nowadays, I still really enjoy the music and totally dig dancing at the shows.

  I was just wondering if anyways shares this strange love of music and counter-culture?

  I have a band, we were called 'the fockers' or 'martha focker' but since those seem to be taken we are now 'purple penis popcicles' Just a two man band, I howl and play guitar and my buddy drums like animal(from the muppets) leaving huge piles of sawdust and mumbles softly backup. We play mostly hippie music I guess, old stuff or anything fun and melodic. Sometimes we get a bass player, sitar or even flute to join in, we aren't picky and suck so anyone with taste.

  what do you think of my following theories?

  in the 70s, many converts to jw-dom were influenced by the anti-establishment philosophy and anti-viet nam war.

  My father supposedly quit his career in the navy to join the JW's. No doubt, an exception.

  Need Super Geeks...

  ok...my campus computer lab has all machines running win2k sp4...all new dell p4's.

  well i've got the problem where it isn't reading many floppy drives formatted in me, win 9x...this is causing a huge problem because win2k isn't reading the media descriptor or the floppy doesn't have one and then it proceeds to ask the student if they want to format the disk.

  you could see how this might be deleterious to the undereducated computer user and all the yes clicks that might happen.

  I am sure you have thought of it and I know it isn't the most eloquent solution, but how about bringing up a 98/Me box and putting a network share on the floppy. Then at least it can be read. I guess you want a permanant and workable solution, but this might be a workaround, until microsoft never fixes it.

  Also regarding getting rid of floppies, I wish they would. I just built a new machine and didn't put a floppy drive in it. I was thinking the same thing, what is the point, they are slow and hold a tiny amount of data. I have media reader that has 4 slots for different memory cards and a couple dvd/cd drives, why would I need a floppy? I also have a top of the line asus motherboard, kv8 deluxe, best one they have for the athlon 64 series and it can even update it's bios via the internet. Well, it turns out you can't boot from a memory stick (at least I can't find a way) and the bios update tells you when you download the new .bin, DONT UPDATE THIS BIOS VIA THIS PROGRAM. Great, so I can download it, but not update it ... and what good is this program? So the only option I have left to update the bios is via floppy, oh and I was trying to install Windoze to a SATA drive. Can't do that without a floppy either. Anyway, all the talk about phasing out floppies is crap, no one is taking any real steps to do this although with so many having Cd burner's and memory stick readers making headway, I wish they would at least make it possible to have a full function machine without having a floppy.
